Gavin Love announced as new coach at Plymouth Raiders
Tuesday, 8th June, 2010

Plymouth Raiders have replaced Geordie Gary Stronach, with ex-captain Gavin Love.
The announcement was made by Raider’s Chairman Bob Widdecombe, who went on to announce the club’s excitement at the appointment and how Love had brought new ideas and enthusiasm into the franchise, as well as putting together a tough and competitive roster for the new season.

Love, who is from Plymouth, had joined the Raiders in 1996 and eventually made the breakthrough into the senior squad in 2000. Although some would consider him small in today’s basketball, at 6ft, he established himself in the starting five as point guard, unusually, as this position is usually occupied by Americans. The local boy, soon, became a fan’s favourite and team captain. His performances led to a call up to the GB squad in 2007, but he had to withdraw after damaging an ankle in the final game of the BBL season. An operation and 8 months rehabilitation saw Love return to the Plymouth side, but the ankle was never the same again. Love had to announce his retirement from the sport in February 2009. The Raiders announced that they would be retiring Love’s No 6 jersey, in his honour. He returned to the club in early 2010 as Assistant Coach.
As would be expected Love is putting together a back room staff of Mark Cahill, a former player, as Strength and Conditioning Coach and Andy Murphy, a Sport’s Injury Consultant. Love has already been cracking the whip as he told the BBL that pre-season was going well with the players training 8 times a week, five court sessions and 3 conditioning sessions. He has already enlisted the help of the Royal Navy to help with fitness and bonding. Love has, also, been active on the player front, hoping to announce 1, and possibly 2 new signings soon.
We, at the Eagles, wish Gavin success in his new job, but not too much as we intend to the Grand Slam again next season so he will have to be content with runner’s up! It is, however, good to see young British talent getting the chance to coach in the BBL.
