Newcastle Eagles’ Fabulous Flournoy visited Hawthorn Primary School on Friday to surprise the winner of the Newcastle Courtside Challenge Poster competition. Ten-year-old Alia Mohd Shahiouakmal won the Road Safety poster competition and will now see her design featured in the Your Homes Newcastle summer newsletter.
Alia’s poster was picked from over 600 entries to the competition, which was part of the Newcastle Eagles Courtside Challenge. The community initiative is delivered by Eagles players and staff across Tyne and Wear with the support of Your Homes Newcastle and Frank Haslam Milan. The project is focused on local communities and being a good citizen in your neighbourhood.
Players from the Eagles and representatives from YHN and Fhm have visited primary schools in Newcastle over the last four months, distributing task books and explaining the goals of the project.
The Courtside Challenge scheme targets years 5 and 6 and links in with the P.H.S.E. and Citizenship Key Stage 2 curriculum. Tasks in the booklet include an environment wordsearch, a poster competition focusing on road safety, designing a street with a budget, the truth about smoking, a task on what is bullying and exercises on grammar and spelling.

Andrea Scollen Community Liaison Manager for Frank Haslam Milan said: “Frank Haslam Milan North East is once again proud to be working in partnership with the Newcastle Eagles and Your Homes Newcastle. This project has helped us to engage with young people to find out their views about the communities in which they live. We have visited many schools to encourage pupils to get involved with the Courtside Challenge project and the response has been tremendous. I congratulate them all for participating and we look forward to strengthening our partnership with the Newcastle Eagles in future."
John Lee, YHN Chief Executive, said: “The Courtside Challenge project has given us a new way of working with the young people that live on the estates we manage. The schools that were involved in the project are often at the heart of their local community so by speaking to the pupils we can find out about the things they like and the things that they dislike about the area that they live in.
“Their views are being used to influence the services that we deliver, something that is really important to us. We are really pleased with the results and we look forward to continuing our successful partnership with the Newcastle Eagles”.
Eagles managing director Paul Blake said: “It has been great to work alongside Your Homes Newcastle on this project for the second year and also to be joined by Frank Haslam Milan Ltd. Both companies are very proactive in our local community.
“The project was set up to promote good citizenship, find out about what youngsters feel about their community and to reward children for their efforts by coming to watch the North East’s most successful sports team. We have had an amazing response and we are delighted to see the project triple in size. I look forward to working with both partners on the project again next year.”
